(COOLLIST) Therapy, Magnapop, Rabbits
A three-or-four-tiered essay today:
1) I write (COOLLIST) for a number of internal and external reasons.
I think writing is a way to sharpen the mind and clarify ones
thoughts. I like communicating with others, although I'm a bit timid
in creating new channels of communication. I also write as a form of
therapy. We all can use some mental help, just as we all can use
physical help from time to time. When I write a (CL) piece, I'm
consciously trying to make a point to a group of people that I know
and about which I care. That focus is stimulating, and it makes me
feel good. Thanks for being there.
2) A new album, _Rubbing Doesn't Help_, by the Atlanta group Magnapop
joined my collection recently. Its pretty good, although I favor
their first two releases. I understand that they are great live;
fortunately for me, they will be in Austin on July 11th at Liberty
Lunch, so I'll be there able to see for myself. It should be a very
cool show.
3) In case you've not seen my webspace lately, I have a new companion
living with me--a four month old American Polish dwarf rabbit. Her
name is Echo, she enjoys basil stems and ear scratching, and is very
cute. I've a picture online, but I'm going to put a better one up
soon, since I taped her prancing around last night.
4) (BONUS!) A friend of mine back in Georgia, Andrea Knight, once used
a feminist quote about James Bond as her signature for e-mail and news
postings. Well, yesterday I understood exactly what she meant as I
saw _Dr. No_ and _From Russia With Love_ at Austin's landmark
Paramount Theatre (Austin : Paramount:: Atlanta: Fox). They are both
very fun films, but they also had deep misogynist themes which
disturbed me. I'm quite glad that last year's _Goldeneye_ made an
attempt to correct for some of these sins of the past. If you are an
Austinite, be sure to go see Tuesday's showing of the cold war classic
_Doctor Strangelove_. That is a movie I can recommend without
hesitation!
