(COOLLIST) forwarded message from Firstname Lastname
[Sometimes I get a good laugh out of error messages. In this case, I
was replying to someone's mail where his mailer wasn't set up
correctly, but due to Motorola's e-mail system, all the useful header
info that I could use to track the offending user got tossed. -- Ben]
Congratulations!
You've just reached the example domain, domain.com.
Most likely, you're replying to a piece of mail which you received
from someone who never finished configuring his or her email software,
leaving the example address, "user@host.domain.com", in the "Reply-To"
field of the software's configuration preferences.
Also, you didn't look to see where the mail you were sending was
going. Since the "From" address and the "Reply-To" address of a piece
of email you receive can be different, particularly in the case of
mailing lists, it can be embarassing at best, and dangerous at worst,
to ignore the destination of your outbound mail. Noticing where
you're sending your mail is a habit you should develop in
self-defense, if for no better reason.
If you still wish to contact the sender of the original peice of mail,
examine the header of the piece of mail you were replying to. Unless
it was forged, the first line will contain the sender's true address.
The line will be of the format
"From user@host.domain.com Day Mon DD HH:MM:SS YYYY"
where instead of "user@host.domain.com", you'll see the address to
which you should actually reply. When you do so, please inform the
original sender of their misconfiguration, so that they can correct
it and people can reply to them in the normal fashion in the future.
Thanks, and remember to watch where you're sending your mail!
