RATIONALE

This is the rationale for the proposal as submitted by the proponent.

Euthanasia is without a doubt one of the most important and
controversial issues today. In the wake of the tremendous publicity
surrounding Dr. Jack Kevorkian, as well as the ongoing battle over
Oregon's "Death With Dignity" act, many serious questions are being
raised. How does voluntary euthanasia differ from suicide? Does a
human being have the right to die painlessly, at a time of their own
choosing? If so, how can current legal and medical structures be
modified to protect this right? What role should euthanasia play in
society? At what point does euthanasia become eugenics?

There is currently no instance of the word "euthanasia" in the entire
Usenet hierarchy, and only two instances of the word "suicide."
The discussion in alt.suicide.holiday only rarely touches on
euthanasia; the focus is on suicide and suicide prevention. Some
discussion of euthanasia is seen in sci.med, but it is of a more
technical nature. In short, a major topic is being overlooked.
The group would also provide a gateway to the moderated mailing list
SNUFFIT-L, which is very active and has approximately 500 members.
