(COOLLIST) Unzipped

No, this isn't a kinky (CL) entry, its actually a review of the film I
saw tonight over at the Texas Union Theater on the campus of
UT-Austin.

_Unzipped_, at 79 minutes, isn't the longest film out there. Its
length was a bit refreshing after a season of much too long
films. (_Casino_ anyone?)

It is a documentary about New York fashion designer Issac Mizrahi,
showing his work on his 1994 Fall fashion show. It opens with Issac
crestfallen over a bad review of his previous show, but quickly
becomes upbeat as the flamboyant designer expresses his ideas inspired
by the film _Nanook of the North_. The Eskimo influence, paired with
a Mary Tyler Moore sensibility, defines his new work.

The film has lots of cameos. We see New York hipster (and recent
addition to the "Chicago Hope" cast) Sandra Bernheart walking down the
street with Issac. We see Naomi Campbell at a fitting. We see Cindy
and Richard before the show. Lots of pretty faces.

However, the focus of the film is on the designer, his clothes, and
his ideas. The filmmakers used black and white footage with
occasional foreys into color to good effect. Rough drawings and
filmic inspirations are highlighted. The whole film has a bit of a
campy feel, and it never delves into seriousness, unlike the fashion
shows on E! or VH1.

In summary, _Unzipped_ was an interesting little work. It was quite
educational to me, a fashion neophyte, and a lot of fun. (COOLLIST)
recommends it.
