(COOLLIST) KITH: Brain Candy
Earlier, in (CL), I mentioned the Kids in the Hall movie. Well its
called _Brain Candy_ and its out now. I saw it Saturday. Here is
a review.
In brief, an interesting continuation of several KITH characters, a
few big laughs, but flawed as a stand alone story. +2 on a -4..+4
scale.
The Kids have always taken storytelling and twisted it to their
purposes. They would start skits in the middle of a plot, or end
things as soon as the comic potential was gone. This works well in an
experimental comedy series on a pay cable network. _Brain Candy_ is
the kind of story that would fit well into a long skit on their
lamented show, maybe eight or nine minutes. As a 1.5 hour movie, it
loses interest, and rather quickly.
There are high points. We get to see towel-enabled Paul Bellini
again. Scott Thompson gets some great scenes as a repressed
homosexual in a middle-class family. Subject 957's family dinner is
wonderful. But, the corporate scenes, some of the funniest in the
KITH TV show, just don't work that well, as the characters seem to
restrained by the necessity to keep a plot moving in some rational
way. The film also looks too high budget in parts, most vividly in
the odd computer graphics used before entering a character's mind.
Since I'm a big KITH fan, I did get a lot out of the movie, and I'm
glad I saw it. However, if you aren't familiar with the 155 episodes
the KITH did before hitting Hollywood, go watch a few of them first,
then see _Brain Candy_, and if for some reason you don't like the TV
show, don't even attempt to watch the film.
Blick out.
