(COOLLIST) VR on the cheap
Gateway Electronics <URL:http://www.gatewayelex.com/> sells surplus
electronics gear. I saw an advertisement of theirs in a recent issue
of Nuts and Volts, the invaluable electronics hacker marketplace that
I was never able to find in Atlanta. Its plentiful here in Austin.
One of the items they had for sale was intriguing. For $65, you get a
headset that includes a video display, stereo headphones, and a motion
sensor. The display is only mono -- the same image goes to each eye,
but it seems pretty neat.
I ordered one for my birthday with half the capital coming from my
parents. It was designed to work with the Sega Genesis and Super
Nintendo game systems and comes with connector cables for each.
Gateway threw in a DB-15 connector and a pin-out diagram so you could
connect your own audio and composite video source. I'm probably going
to make a interface box tonight.
The uses are many. I plan on trying it out with most of my video game
systems. With a VGA-to-composite scan converter, it can be used with
a PC. I really want to hook it up to my video camera, but I need to
make a battery pack interface before it will be portable.
If all else fails, it will sure make a nice prop and conversation
piece!
Any other ideas? How about a touch typing trainer where you CAN'T
look at the keys? That's always been my problem. Video editing could
be neat, with the left and right head sensors tied to fast forward and
reverse.
TTYL!
